To keep your virtual meetings running smoothly and to get an overall stable experience from Zoom, you should keep the Zoom app up to date on all your devices. We’ll show you how to do just that.

Note: If your device is managed by an IT team in your organization, you might have to reach out to them to update Zoom.

Update Zoom on Desktop

On Windows and Mac, Zoom updates itself automatically. You only have to toggle on a one-time setting and it enables automatic updates. If you’re having issues with updating, though, you can still force a manual update from within the app or download the latest app file from the Zoom site.

On a Linux machine, you do not have the automatic update option in Zoom. You will have to rely on manual update methods.

Update Zoom Automatically (Windows and Mac)

To make Zoom automatically download and install app updates, enable a one-time option in the app as follows. Make sure you have admin rights on your computer, as you will need them to toggle on the option.

Start by opening the Zoom app on your computer. Then, in Zoom’s top-right corner, click your profile icon.

In the profile menu, click “Settings.”

On the “Settings” window, from the left sidebar, select “General.”

Click "General" on the "Settings" window.

In the pane on the right, toggle on the “Automatically Keep Zoom Up to Date” option. You might get an admin prompt, in which you have to select yes.

Enable the "Automatically Keep Zoom Up to Date" option.

Next to the “Automatically Keep Zoom Up to Date” option, you have a drop-down menu letting you select how often you wish to receive Zoom updates.

The available options are:

  • Slow: If you select this option, Zoom will get fewer updates but your app experience will be more stable.
  • Fast: This option will give you more frequent updates, but at the possible cost of app stability.
Select "Slow" or "Fast."

Save your settings by closing the “Settings” window.

Update Zoom Manually (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

If you are on Linux, or if Zoom doesn’t seem to be updating automatically on your Windows or Mac computer, force the app to check for and install new updates.

To do so, first, open Zoom on your computer. Then, in Zoom’s top-right corner, click your profile icon.

In the menu that opens, click “Check for Updates.”

Click "Check for Updates" in Zoom's profile menu.

You will see a “Zoom Update” window. Here, Zoom will automatically check for any available updates. If an update is available, it will be installed. If there are no updates available, you will see a message stating “You are up to date.”

Download and Update Zoom (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

In case you are experiencing an issue where Zoom won’t open on your computer, or it won’t update using the in-app options, download the latest Zoom app from its site and install it on your computer. This way, you will have the latest version of Zoom.

To do so, open a web browser on your computer and access the Zoom Download Center site.

On the site, click the large “Download” button. This downloads the Zoom app to your computer.

Click "Download" to download Zoom.

When the app is downloaded, open the folder where you saved it and double-click the app file.

Run downloaded Zoom file.

Install the app as usual, and when it’s done, you will be running the latest Zoom version. Enjoy!
