An organized, comprehensive, easy-to-read syllabus will make a positive first impression on your students by showing them that you have put a lot of thought and effort into the organization of the course, considered what they will learn, and that you care about the quality of their experience in the course. On the other hand, a disorganized, incomplete, and hard-to-read syllabus will make a negative impression on your students by showing them that you have not thought deeply about the organization of the course or what they will learn, and it may suggest that you are not very invested in giving students a high-quality experience (Cunliff, 2015).

Policies and instructions written with a friendly and welcoming tone may encourage students to communicate with you and ask questions. The aim of this 2021 WAEC Chemistry Syllabus is to prepare the candidates for the Board’s examination. It is designed to test their achievement of the course objectives, which are to:

(ii) use boiling and melting points as criteria for purity of chemical substances;

2. Chemical combination

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) perform simple calculations involving formulae, equations/chemical composition and the mole concept;

3. Kinetic theory of matter and Gas Laws

Topics:

(a) An outline of the kinetic theory of matter;

(i) melting,

(ii) vapourization

(iii) boiling

(iv) freezing

(v) condensation in terms of molecular motion and Brownian movement.

(b)(i) The laws of Boyle, Charles, Graham and Dalton (law of partial pressure); combined gas law, molar volume and atomicity of gases.

(ii) The ideal gas equation (PV = nRT).

(iii) The relationship between vapour density of gases and the relative molecular mass.

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) apply the theory to distinguish between solids, liquids and gases;

4. Atomic structure and bonding

Topics:

(a) (i)The concept of atoms, molecules and ions, the works of Dalton, Millikan, Rutherford, Moseley, Thompson and Bohr.

(ii) Atomic structure, electron configuration, atomic number, mass number and isotopes; specific examples should be drawn from elements of atomic number 1 to 20.

(iii) Shapes of s and p orbitals.

(b) The periodic table and periodicity of elements, presentation of the periodic table with a view to recognizing families of elements e.g. alkali metals, halogens, the noble gases and transition metals. The variation of the following properties: ionization energy, ionic radii, electron affinity and electronegativity.

(c) Chemical bonding. Electrovalency and covalency, the electron configuration of elements and their tendency to attain the noble gas structure. Hydrogen bonding and metallic bonding as special types of electrovalency and covalency respectively; coordinate bond as a type of covalent bond as illustrated by complexes like [Fe(CN)6]3-, [Fe(CN)6]4-, [Cu(NH3)4]2+ and [Ag(NH3)2]+; van der Waals’ forces should be mentioned as a special type of bonding forces.

(d) Shapes of simple molecules: linear ((H2, O2, Cl2,HCl and CO2), non-linear (H2O) and tetrahedral; (CH4) and pyramidal (NH3).

(e) Nuclear Chemistry:

(i) Radioactivity – Types and properties of radiations

(ii) Nuclear reactions. Simple equations, uses and applications of natural and artificial radioactivity.

(i) distinguish between atoms, molecules and ions;

(ii) identify the contributions of these scientists to the development of the atomic structure;

5. Air

Topics:

(a) The natural gaseous constituents and their proportion in the air.- nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour, carbon (IV) oxide and the noble gases (argon and neon).

(b) Air as a mixture and some uses of the noble gas.

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) deduce reason (s) for the existence of air as a mixture;

(ii) identify the principle involved in the separation of air components;

(iii) deduce reasons for the variation in the composition of air in the environment;

(iv) specify the uses of some of the constituents of air.

6. Water

Topics:

(a) Water as a product of the combustion of hydrogen and its composition by volume.

(b) Water as a solvent, atmospheric gases dissolved in water and their biological significance.

(c) Hard and soft water: Temporary and permanent hardness and methods of softening hard

water.

(d) Treatment of water for town supply.

(e) Water of crystallization, efflorescence, deliquescence and hygroscopy. Example of the substance exhibiting these properties and their uses.:

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) identify the various uses of water;

(ii) identity the effects of dissolved atmospheric gases in water;

(iii) distinguish between the properties of hard and soft water;

(iv) determine the causes of hardness;

(v) identify methods of removal of hardness;

7. Solubility

Topics:

(a) Unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated solutions. Solubility curves and simple deductions from them, (solubility defined in terms of mole per dm3) and simple calculations.

(b) Solvents for fats, oil and paints and the use of such solvents for the removal of stains.

(c) False solution (Suspensions and colloids): Properties and examples. Harmattan haze and water paints as examples of suspensions and fog, milk, aerosol spray, emulsion paints and rubber solution as examples of colloids.

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) distinguish between the different types of solutions;

(ii) interpret solubility curves;

(iii) calculate the amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature;

(iv) deduce that solubility is temperature-dependent;

Topics:

(a) Sources and effects of pollutants.

(b) Air pollution: Examples of air pollutants such as H2S, CO, SO2, oxides of nitrogen, chlorofluorocarbons and dust.

(c) Water pollution Sewage and oil pollution should be known.

(d) Soil pollution: Oil spillage, Biodegradable and non-biodegradable pollutants.

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) identify the different types of pollution and pollutants;

(ii) specify different sources of pollutants

(iii) classify pollutants as biodegradable and non-biodegradable;

(iv) specify the effects of pollution on the environment;

9. Acids, bases and salts

Topics:

(a) General characteristics and properties of acids, bases and salts. Acids/base indicators, basicity of acids; normal, acidic, basic and double salts. An acid defined as a substance whose aqueous solution furnishes H3O+ions or as a proton donor.

Ethanoic, citric and tartaric acids as examples of naturally occurring organic acids, alums as examples of double salts, preparation of salts by neutralization, precipitation and action of acids on metals. Oxides and trioxocarbonate (IV) salts

(b) Qualitative comparison of the conductances of molar solutions of strong and weak acids and bases, relationship between conductance and amount of ions present.

(c) pH and pOH scale; Simple calculations

(ii) Factors affecting discharge of ions at the electrodes.

(c) Uses of electrolysis: Purification of metals e.g. copper and production of elements and compounds (Al, Na, O2, Cl2 and NaOH).

(d) Electrochemical cells: Redox series (K, Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Sn, Pb, H, Cu, Hg, Ag, Au,) half-cell reactions and electrode potentials. (Simple calculations only).

(e) Corrosion as an electrolytic process, cathodic protection of metals, painting, electroplating and coating with grease or oil as ways of preventing iron from corrosion.

Topics:

(a) Energy changes ?H accompanying physical and chemical changes: dissolution of substances in/or reaction with water e.g. Na, NaOH, K, NH4Cl. Endothermic +?H and exothermic -?H reactions.

(b) Entropy as an order-disorder phenomenon: simple illustrations like mixing of gases and dissolution of salts.

(c) Spontaneity of reactions: ?G  = 0 as a criterion for equilibrium, ?G greater or less than zero as a criterion for non-spontaneity or spontaneity respectively.

13. Rates of Chemical Reaction

Topics:

(a) Elementary treatment of the following factors which can change the rate of a chemical reaction:

(i) Temperature e.g. the reaction between HCl and Na2S2O3 or Mg and HCl

(ii) Concentration e.g. the reaction between HCl and Na2S2O3, HCl and marble and the iodine clock reaction, for gaseous systems, pressure may be used as concentration term.

(iii) Surface area e.g. the reaction between marble and HCl withmarble in(i) powdered form(ii) lumps of the same mass.

(iv) Catalyst e.g. the decomposition of H2O2 or KClO3 in the presence or absence of MnO2

(b) Reaction rate curves.

(c) Activation energy Qualitative treatment of Arrhenius’ law and the collision theory, effect of light on some reactions. e.g. halogenation of alkanes

14. Chemical equilibra

Topics:

Reversible reactions and factors governing the equilibrium position. Dynamic equilibrium. Le Chatelier’s principle and equilibrium constant. Simple examples to include action of steam on iron and N2O4 2NO2. No calculation will be required.

Objectives:

Candidates should be able to:

(i) identify the factors that affects the position of equilibrium of a chemical reaction;

(ii) predict the effects of each factor on the position of equilibrium;

(iii) determine the effects of these factors on equilibrium constant.

15. Non-metals and their compounds

Topics:

(a) Hydrogen: commercial production from water gas and cracking of petroleum fractions, laboratory preparation, properties, uses and test for hydrogen.

(b) Halogens: Chlorine as a representative element of the halogen. Laboratory preparation, industrial preparation by electrolysis, properties and uses, e.g. water sterilization, bleaching, manufacture of HCl, plastics and insecticides. Hydrogen chloride and Hydrochloric acid: Preparation and properties. Chlorides and test for chlorides.

(c) Oxygen and Sulphur

(i) Oxygen: Laboratory preparation, properties and uses. Commercial production from liquid air. Oxides: Acidic,basic, amphoteric and neutral, trioxygen (ozone) as an allotrope and the importance of ozone in the atmosphere.

(ii) Sulphur: Uses and allotropes: preparation of allotropes is not expected . Preparation, properties and uses of sulphur(IV) oxide, the reaction of SO2 with alkalis. Trioxosulphate (IV) acid and its salts, the effect of acids on salts of trioxosulphate(IV), Tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid:

Commercial preparation (contact process only), properties as a dilute acid, an oxidizing and a dehydrating agent and uses. Test for SO42-. Hydrogen sulphide: Preparation and properties as a weak acid, reducing agent and precipitating agent. Test for S2.

17. Organic Compounds

Topics:

An introduction to the tetra-valance of carbon, the general formula, IUPAC nomenclature and the determination ofempirical formula of each class of the organic compounds mentioned below.

(a) Aliphatic hydrocarbons

(i) Alkanes Homologous series in relation to physical properties, substitution reaction and a few examples and uses of halogenated products. Isomerism: structural only (examples on isomerism should not go beyond six carbon atoms).

Petroleum: composition, fractional distillation and major products; cracking and reforming, Petrochemicals – starting materials of organic syntheses, quality of petrol and meaning of octane number.

(ii) Alkenes Isomerism: structural and geometric isomerism, additional and polymerization reactions, polythene and synthetic rubber as examples of products of polymerization and its use in vulcanization.

(iii) Alkynes Ethyne – production from action of water on carbides, simple reactions and properties of ethyne.

2022 WAEC GCE First Series Registration Form: West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates [WAEC GCE] First (1st) Series [January/February] Online Registration Form | Payment | Price | Closing Date for 2021/2022 Session.

This is to inform intending candidates of WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2022 – First Series that e-registration for the examination commenced on 20th December, 2021 to 21st January, 2022.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), began the conduct of two series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates in 2018.

The First Series Examination for 2022 will be conducted in January, 2022.

The WASSCE for Private Candidates 2022 – First Series would be an urban-based examination. It is intended to help candidates, who have deficiencies in their WASSCE results, bridge the gap.

Nineteen (19) Subjects will be available for the Examination. Intending candidates for the examination are, therefore, strongly advised to visit the link – www.waecnigeria.org- to confirm available examination towns and subjects before obtaining the registration PIN.

APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION

Intending candidates for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are hereby informed that the Private Candidates, 2022 – First Series registration will be online.

Prospective candidates can either purchase the registration pin themselves online and proceed to a cyber cafe to register or do all the registration process in an approved registration cyber cafes..

After obtaining the Registration PIN. candidates should log on to www.waeconline.org.ng for registration. Candidates should also note that the registration procedure has been designed to accommodate biometric features that will be used for validation at the examination centres.

3. NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (NIN)

Each Candidate is expected to have a National Identification Number for the Registration exercise.

4. MODE OF PAYMENT

Candidates are expected to pay a registration fee of Eighteen Thousand Naira only (N18,000) at branches of any of the following banks or any accredited agent and obtain the registration PIN and the information VCD:

5. REGISTRATION PERIOD

The normal registration period is from Monday December 20th, 2021 to Friday January 21st, 2022. Candidates who purchased the registration pin and are yet to register have until Sunday 23rd January, 2022 to complete their registration before the final closure of registration portal by 11:59pm.

After obtaining the registration PIN, candidates should log on to for registration. Candidates should also note that the registration procedure has been designed to accommodate biometric features that will be used for validation at the examination centres.

6. ONLINE REGISTRATION

Candidates must conclude registration within two weeks of first access to the website during the registration period. They should ensure that their names, gender, passport photographs, dates of birth and subjects are correct. They are also to print the admission notice/photo card as evidence of successful registration.

This will serve as their photo card during the examination. The result checker PIN will also be on the photo card.

Only Digital Personal Scanner should be used for fingerprint registration.

7. CANDIDATES WITH DISABILITIES AND IMPAIRMENT

Candidates with disabilities /impairment will also register online like other candidates but they must clearly state their disabilities /impairment e.g blind, low vision, spastic, speech, etc.

8. WALK-IN CANDIDATES 

Candidates who wish to register for the examination after the close of entries may be accommodated as “Walk-in-Candidates” provided they register not less than twenty four hours to the scheduled time of the paper (s) they intend to write. The “Walk-in-Candidates” fee is Thirty Thousand Five Naira (N30,500.00) only.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION

(1) Candidates should view the Information VCD before they register for the examination.

(2) Candidates should note that examination fees are not refundable.

(3) Candidates should print the examination Timetable at the completion of their registration.

(4) Entries must be uploaded with good quality passport size photographs, not “wait and get” photographs.

The background of such photographs MUST NOT BE BLUE OR RED. The size should be 275 by 314 pixels. Entries with unacceptable passport photographs will be rejected.

Lighting

1)Adequate lighting must be provided to brighten the face.

(5) Candidates should study the Regulations and Syllabuses as well as the Timetable for the examination, Sample Scheme, and Questions which they can download from WAEC’s website ( ) using their registration PIN.

(6) All candidates must go to their examination halls in mufti and without arms. No professional uniform of any kind will be allowed in the examination hall.

(7) The entire results of candidates who sit for the examination in more than one center will be canceled.

(8) Smoking is not allowed in the examination hall.

(9) Any candidate that comes into the examination hall with a mobile phone and /or electronic or communication gadgets will have his or her entire results canceled.

(10) All candidates must ensure that their entries are correctly uploaded, as the Council will not be held responsible for errors in candidates’ particulars. No request for correction will be entertained on any information which a candidate voluntarily gives at the point of registration as soon as the examination commences.

(11) Candidates must come into the examination hall with their original photo cards.

(12) Candidates who engage in examination malpractice will not only have their results canceled but may be prosecuted.

(13) Candidates must ensure they provide valid email addresses and telephone numbers (s) during registration.

Latest Update: WASSCE for School Candidates (May/June) Registration (Final Extension Notice): Information reaching us confirms that the sales of registration/application forms for the 2022 WASSCE for School candidates commenced on Monday 6th December 2021. The West African Examinations Council has floated entries for the e-registration of candidates for WASSCE for School Candidates, 2022. Offline and Online Registration is NOW ONGOING and ends on Friday 11th March 2022 (Final Deadline).

This is to inform the General Public, Schools Parents, and Students that the sales of forms of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE for School Candidate formerly known as WAEC May/June for the 2021/2022 Academic Session has commenced.

Prospective Schools are expected to collect the approved registration fees from all their candidates and issue one bank draft in favor of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

This cheque is paid at the WAEC Zonal/Branch Office in charge of their State.

The designated WAEC Finance Officer in the Zonal/Branch Office enters information regarding the payment on his computer and issues the schools a scratch card or pay voucher containing information to enable the Principal/Examination Officer to sign up to the e-Registration Website.

However, to make the online registration trouble-free, especially for schools without Internet Service in their locality, we have made provision for offline registration on their standalone PCs or through Business Centers in their locality.

The CD-ROM containing this offline registration facility will be given to schools along with the pay voucher upon payment. This also means that schools could start registering their candidates as they collect entry fees from them.

WAEC May/June Online Registration Instructions/Guidelines for 2021/2022

Schools are required to use Internet Explorer which comes standard with Microsoft Windows for easier registration.

While on this website, click on the “May/June Examinations” icon. This takes you straight to the e-Registration home page.

Notes: Your computer must be connected to the Internet to do this.

For schools without an Internet connection, they could register at the WAEC Zonal/Branch Office in charge of their State or the nearest Cyber café or use the offline registration facility.

Once a School Examination Officer is properly identified by the system, he/she could register as many candidates as the PIN allocated to the school will allow him.

The following are the steps the examination officer will take to register candidates:

·         · Sign up/Login to the E-Registration Website as described in Section 2.2 above

·         · Click “Register” on the cascade menu

·         · The Center Number, the School Name, and the number of entries remaining for the school with the Registration Form will be displayed

·         · Each Candidate’s details such as Surname, First Name, Date of Birth, Sex, and subjects must be entered. The candidate’s passport photograph and signature must also be captured.

Note: All the Boxes marked (*) are compulsory fields and must be filled.

·        Scan the actual passport photograph of the candidate using a flatbed scanner or Take a passport photograph of the candidate with a digital camera

·         · The passport photograph must be clear and the candidate’s face must NOT be obstructed in any way by items like glasses, sunglasses, headgear, etc

·         · Store the picture in JPEG format using candidate’s name

For schools in the rural areas and/or schools without computers and/or Internet facilities, WAEC has installed in all its Zonal/Branch Offices, Computers, Scanners, Printers, and Internet Service. This will enable such schools to register their candidates online or upload the candidates they have registered offline.

This will surely make it possible for all schools to get their candidates registered on time and with ease.

Schools wishing to use these facilities, especially for scanning and printing may be required to pay a token for the facilities. Such additional fees will be communicated to the schools during the training program.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2022 – Second Series.

The West African Examination Council, WAEC, has released the results of the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, 30 days after the conduct of the examination across Nigeria.

By this information, candidates who sat for the examination are advised to start checking their results 24 hours after result release has been announced.

·        Candidates are to log on to the WAEC result checking portal via http://www.waecdirect.org.

·        Enter your WAEC Examination Number in the required column.

·        Select your Examination Year i.e. 2021.

·        Select your Examination Type i.e. PRIVATE CANDIDATE RESULT (SECOND SERIES).

·        Enter the Card Serial Number.

·        Enter the Card PIN.

·        Finally, click the “Submit” button to get your 2021 WAEC GCE August/Sept Result.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 20212WASSCE for School Candidates Examination.

Announcing the results at the WAEC headquarters in Lagos, the Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Olu Adenipekun also disclosed the statistics of students’ performance in the examination.

2022 WAEC May/June Registration Form | Instructions & Guidelines UPDATED

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates or May/June Registration Form, Application Guidelines, Prices, Deadline / Closing Date for 2021/2022 Session

Latest Update: WASSCE for School Candidates (May/June) Registration (Final Extension Notice): Information reaching us confirms that the sales of registration/application forms for the 2022 WASSCE for School candidates commenced on Monday 6th December, 2021. The West African Examinations Council has floated entries for the e-registration of candidates for WASSCE for School Candidates, 2022. Offline and Online Registration is NOW ONGOING and ends on Friday 11th March 2022 (Final Deadline).

This is to inform the General Public, Schools Parents, and Students that the sales of forms of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE for School Candidate formerly known as WAEC May/June for the 2021/2022 Academic Session has commenced.

Prospective Schools are expected to collect the approved registration fees from all their candidates and issue one bank draft in favor of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

This cheque is paid at the WAEC Zonal/Branch Office in charge of their State.

The designated WAEC Finance Officer in the Zonal/Branch Office enters information regarding the payment on his computer and issues the school a scratch card or pay voucher containing information to enable the Principal/Examination Officer to sign up to the e-Registration Website.

However, to make the online registration trouble-free, especially for schools without Internet Service in their locality, we have made provision for offline registration on their standalone PCs or through Business Centers in their locality.

The CD-ROM containing this offline registration facility will be given to schools along with the pay voucher upon payment. This also means that schools could start registering their candidates as they collect entry fees from them.

WAEC May/June Online Registration Instructions/Guidelines for 2021/2022

Schools are required to use Internet Explorer which comes standard with Microsoft Windows for easier registration.

To get to this website, launch the Windows Internet Explorer on your PC and type the following http://www.waeconline.org.ng Or http://www.waeconline.org.ng/register/

While on this website, click on the “May/June Examinations” icon. This takes you straight to the e-Registration home page.

Notes: Your computer must be connected to the Internet to do this.

For schools without an Internet connection, they could register at the WAEC Zonal/Branch Office in charge of their State or the nearest Cyber café or use the offline registration facility.

Once a School Examination Officer is properly identified by the system, he/she could register as many candidates as the PIN allocated to the school will allow him.

The following are the steps the examination officer will take to register candidates:

·         · Sign up/Login to the E-Registration Website as described in Section 2.2 above

·         · Click “Register” on the cascade menu

·         · The Center Number, the School Name, and the number of entries remaining for the school with the Registration Form will be displayed

·         · Each Candidate’s details such as Surname, First Name, Date of Birth, Sex, and subjects must be entered. The candidate’s passport photograph and signature must also be captured.

Note: All the Boxes marked (*) are compulsory fields and must be filled.

·        Scan the actual passport photograph of the candidate using a flatbed scanner or Take a passport photograph of the candidate with a digital camera

·         · The passport photo should be black and white, 35mm x 40mm in size with a contrasting background

·         · The passport photograph must be clear and the candidate’s face must NOT be obstructed in any way by items like glasses, sunglasses, headgear, etc

·         · Store the picture in JPEG format using candidate’s name

For schools in the rural areas and/or schools without computers and/or Internet facilities, WAEC has installed in all its Zonal/Branch Offices, Computers, Scanners, Printers, and Internet Service. This will enable such schools to register their candidates online or upload the candidates they have registered offline.

This will surely make it possible for all schools to get their candidates registered on time and with ease.

Schools wishing to use these facilities, especially for scanning and printing may be required to pay a token for the facilities. Such additional fees will be communicated to the schools during the training program.

PAYMENT GUIDELINES

All Schools are to visit WAEC Offices in their area of jurisdiction to complete a Remittance form and get approval from their State’s Ministry of Education for the number of candidates they intend to register and also obtain the endorsement of WAEC Branch Controllers or Zonal Coordinators in their States.

Schools should proceed to make their payments for the WASSCE (SC) 2022 in multiple of N18,000 through NIBSS EBILLSPAY in all the Banks listed in the adverts viz:

The Print out collected after payment should be taken to WAEC Office for collection of registration PIN, after which they should proceed with the online registration.

TIME-TABLE

·         The Official Time-Table of the WAEC May/June Exam will be made available online.

DEADLINE 

The closing date of registration for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2022 will end on Friday 11th March 2022. at exactly 11:59 pm.
